Field trip

The Grade 2 students will learn about simple machines and states of matter at the Science and Technology museum on Friday, May 31st, 2013.  We will leave Westwind at 9:30 am and will return at 3:30pm, in time to catch the bus to go home.  On the day of the trip students will need to bring a lunch and two snacks and a knapsack; their agenda should be left at home on this special day.

Thank you for your help in preparing this event.  We’re looking forward to a great day!

Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt Presentation

Today, students followed Clara's story of bravery and ingenuity that led her to create a work of art to be used as a map to the Underground Railroad and ultimately to freedom in Canada. The students participated and appreciated this journey back in time and learned the role that Canada played in freeing thousands of oppresses slaves. Through story telling and imagination this historic time period came alive for students.

Math talk

Your child is learning about time and temperature. You can practise these concepts at home by doing the following activities.

·          Discuss with your child special events your family celebrates during the year. Have your child help record these dates on a calendar.

·          If you have an outside thermometer at home, direct your child’s attention to where the mercury is in the morning and then again at night. Ask him or her if the mercury has risen or fallen.

·          Put an outdoor thermometer outside a window for you and your child to view together. With your child, record the temperature over a few weeks. Ask your child to look at the record, determine the lowest and highest temperatures, and calculate the difference between them. Talk with your child about how the temperature affected his or her activities.

Use of French

Developing oral language skills and vocabulary in French is an important part of the French Immersion curriculum. Students are expected to speak French in class at all times (except during recess, lunch, English Language Arts, and special events.) Starting this week, we will be implementing a weekly oral French progress report.

Please initial weekly and return to school every Monday. We would appreciate you following up with your child regularly to encourage French use in the classroom.

Merci,

Mme Kelly & Mme Audy

Dear Parents,

I am sorry to give you such short notice but I only found out myself today that Friday is "Dress Up As Your Favourite Super Hero Day". Also, tomorrow you will receive your child's evaluation duo-tang. Please take the time to look over it with your child and return it signed by Monday. Finally, I am sending home a telephone call sheet if you would like to speak to me regarding your child's progress.
Thanks and have a great evening!
