Have a good weekend! Check out Demande-moi!

Dear Parents,

Mr Mignon the Hamster is looking for two families to take care of him over the holidays, one for each week. During the first week, his cage would need to be cleaned before being passed onto his second pet sitter. If you and your child would like to take care of him over the holidays, please send me an email or a note in the agenda by Tuesday and let me know if you'd prefer the first or second week. We will have a draw on Wednesday.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Mme Audy

Math talk
We are starting addition and subtraction

How you can help at home!
Adding and Subtracting Made Fun
You can make up games that involve adding and subtracting numbers by using
number cubes and number cards. Have your child help you make four or more sets
of number cards. Each card will have a number from one to ten on one side of it.

Here are some games to try:

• Higher Number. Shuffle or mix up the cards and then leave them face down in a

pile. Each player takes two cards and adds the numbers. The player with the higher
sum gets the other player’s cards. Players continue to take and add up two cards
at a time until no cards are left. The player with more cards is the winner. You
can play the same game with subtraction, but it would be called Lower Number.
The player with the lower difference (answer) gives his or her cards to the other
player. The person with the fewest cards at the end is the winner. You can play the
same game with multiplication.

• Number Cube Twice. Each player rolls two number cubes and adds the numbers

shown. The higher number wins. You can play the same game with subtraction and
multiplication.

• Ask for your child’s help to count items in your home. “I wonder how many chairs
we have around the table? In this room? In the house?” Count windows, light
switches, lamps or beds. You might record “how many” by using a combination of
numbers and pictures.

Bonne fin de semaine.

** Don't forget it’s costume day Wednesday!

Masks, blood and gore as well as weapons e.g. swords, guns, knives etc. that are often used to compliment an outfit, are not permitted.

You may send in treats if you wish (completely optional). Students will be able to share and eat treats. I will monitor how many treats there are and if the quantity is excessive they can take the balance home to enjoy over time.

ABSOLUTELY NO TREATS THAT CONTAIN NUT PRODUCTS OF ANY KIND OR NUT BY-PRODUCTS MAY BE SENT TO THE SCHOOL.

Pokemon

Dear Parents and students,

Starting Wednesday, October 17th, we are asking that all Pokemon cards remain at home, and are not brought to school!

Over the past month we have been helping students sort out hurt feelings resulting from unfair trades and thefts. Also, students have been leaving their Pokemon cards on the ground then coming back to find them gone.

If the Pokemon cards are brought to school they will be taken and kept in a teacher’s desk until the end of the week.

Thank you for your support!

Patterns

We are currently studying patterns. Here are some at home tips.

  • Clap your hands and stomp one foot in a sequence (such as clap, clap, stomp; clap, clap, stomp; clap, clap, stomp). Have your child repeat the same sequence. Then together create variations of the pattern.
  • Have fun teaching your child simple dances that include a sequence of steps and movements.
  • Help your child to recognize the patterns that are all around – and to describe them by using mathematical words, such as repeat, over again, it’s the same and it changes to.
  • Your child will find patterns in clothing, in wallpaper, in tiles, on toys and among trees and flowers. Encourage your child to describe the patterns found. Have your child try to identify the features of the pattern that repeat.
  • With your child, try searching for images on the Internet by using such keywords as “patterns around us.”
  • Lay a row of nine spoons so that each handle points up or down in a pattern with a core of up, up, down (up, up, down; up, up, down; up, up, down). Ask your child to extend the pattern. Make this task more challenging and ask your child to describe and say the patterns aloud. Make the pattern core longer – for example, up, up, down, up; up, up, down, up; up, up, down, up.

School supplies

Dear parents,
In the goal to promote the idea of sharing as an integral part of the classroom community, all the students supplies (pencil, erasers, markers, etc) will be shared and used by all the children. One of the underlying tenets of a responsive classroom is the idea of shared ownership. This emphasizes communal responsibility for the materials used by all children. If your child has any supplies they do not wish to share with their classmates please ask them to bring them home.

Sincerely,
Mme Audy

EQAO

Between May 23 and June 6, your child will be taking part in the provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.

There will be two booklets assessing language and a third booklet assessing mathematics. In total, the assessment will be completed in six one hour sessions.

Students will write the test in their regular classrooms with their regular teachers and are simply encouraged to do their best and show what they know.

For more information about EQAO and to view a sample of its assessments, you are encouraged to visit www.eqao.com.

MATH TALK

In Math, we are currently investigating patterns. Understanding patterns helps prepare children for the study of number sense, measurement, geometry, algebra, and data management in later grades.

Your child will learn to identify the attributes of patterns (such as colour, shape, and size) that change and those that stay the same.

What words can be used in describing patterns?
In a repeating pattern, the pattern core is the part of the pattern that continuously recurs (for example, in the pattern ABB, ABB, ABB, the pattern core is ABB). Lay down a row of 9 spoons so that the handles point up or down in a pattern with a core of up, up, down (up, up, down; up, up, down; up, down, down). Ask your child to extend the pattern. Make this task more challenging by making the pattern core longer (for example, up,up,down,up;up,up,down,up;up,up,down,up) or by changing one of the elements in the pattern core (for example,up,up,down, sideways;up,up,down, sideways;up,up,down, sideways). Ask your child to describe the patterns.

What patterns are there in a one hundred chart?
Make a one hundred chart by writing the numbers from 1 to 100 in rows of 10 (1 to 10 in the first row, 11 to 20 in the second row, and so on), or use the one hundred chart on page 9. Ask your child to look for the patterns up and down, across, or diagonally in the chart. For example, have your child pick out all the numbers that contain a 2 or a 7 and describe the different number patterns that he or she sees.

Wear the shirt. Be the difference.

The Canadian Red Cross and RBC Royal Bank invites school to participate in Day of Pink on April 11th, 2012. Join us and schools throughout the province in raising awareness about the impact of bullying!

What is Day of Pink?
It is an initiative that provides students with the opportunity to discuss the impact of bullying and how they can use their power to help create a safe and respectful school environment. On April 11th, 2012 students and staff throughout the province will wear pink shirts in solidarity to show that they are taking a stand against bullying.
